For example, the Barranti Leather Summer Classic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mexican-carry-can-work-in-a-pinch-but-a-good-holster-is-key-to-practical-and-comfortable-concealed-carry-of-a-handgun\"><strong>Mexican carry can work in a pinch, but a good holster is key to practical and comfortable concealed carry of a handgun.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I sometimes get belittled by so-called \u201cdefensive handgun experts\u201d because I\u2019m fond of stuffing my lightweight Browning Hi Power in my waistband without a holster. This is commonly referred to as Mexican\u2014or appendix\u2014carry. I\u2019m often told this is an inherently unsafe practice because the trigger isn\u2019t covered and it doesn\u2019t provide any retention.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1021\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry.jpg\" alt=\"browning-hi-power-mexican-carry\" class=\"wp-image-293350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry.jpg 1021w, https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry-696x436.jpg 696w, https:\/\/gundigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/browning-hi-power-mexican-carry-670x420.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Most handguns aren\u2019t configured well for comfortable and secure Mexican carry. The slim and tapered Hi Power, with its wider-than-its-slide grip, might be the most suited to this method of concealed carry. The key to effective Mexican carry is a sturdy form-fitting belt, like this Galco EDC Holster Belt, that holds the gun firmly to your body and covers the trigger and trigger guard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well, this is <em>partly<\/em> true; the only thing that keeps your gun secure is the tension between your belt and your body. This is a variable tension that\u2019s dependent on what activity you\u2019re currently engaged in. As far as the uncovered trigger, if the gun is shoved in behind your belt so that your belt\u2014and pants\u2014are covering the trigger, I\u2019m not sure what\u2019s going to pull that trigger.<\/p>\n<p>Now, maybe you have gremlins roaming around in your underwear, or maybe\u2014like a fool\u2014you plan to, or will accidentally, stick your trigger finger inside your waist band when you intend to draw your handgun. (If your belt is tight enough to hold up your gun, I\u2019m not sure how that\u2019s possible.)<\/p>\n<p>But aside from gremlins or your own stupidity, you should be OK. For what it\u2019s worth, people negligently shoot themselves by accidentally pulling the trigger when drawing from holsters. It is, however, sometimes very convenient. I work from home, which is where I spend most of my time. If I\u2019m simply running a quick errand or meeting my wife for lunch, I\u2019ll shove my Hi Power in my waistband and carry on. If I know I\u2019m going to be out and about for longer periods of time, I use a holster. The Hi Power just seems like it was made to shove in your belt line. Most other defensive handguns, and especially the micro-nines that are so popular today, are just not shaped right for effective holsterless carry.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-by-any-other-name\"><strong>By Any Other Name<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now, you may be wondering why they call it \u201cMexican Carry.\u201d Well, as the story goes, in response to Mexican anti-gun laws, they say many Mexicans started carrying without a holster. Should they come into unsuspected contact with the authorities, this allowed them to easily ditch their gun, leaving no evidence of ever being armed. This one is made of shark skin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A more accurate description of this carry method is probably just \u201cwaistband carry.\u201d Incidentally, during World War II, French resistance fighters often carried guns with what was called the \u201cOSS string holster\u201d for the same reasons. I\u2019ve never seen any evidence that these brave souls\u2014or Mexicans\u2014experienced self-inflicted gunshot wounds at a rate any higher than folks who carry with a holster.<\/p>\n<p>With that little rant and history lesson taken care of, truth be told, I utilize a holster more than not. The key to practical and comfortable concealed carry of a handgun, especially the itty-bitty ones, is a good holster.
